On the floor
How the floor works.
Walking and improvisation.
Argentine tango is social and improvised. There’s no fixed routine to memorize: you listen, walk together, and find the next step.
The line of dance.
Couples travel counterclockwise around the room. Leave room for the people ahead of you and keep an eye on the floor around you.
Comfort and consent.
The embrace should work for both people. You can ask for more space, decline a dance, or stop and take a break at any time.
Tango terms
Prácticas, milongas
and a few other words.
- Práctica
- A relaxed practice night. Try things, talk through a step, and ask questions. This is what our Wednesdays are for.
- Milonga
- A social dance. It may follow traditions such as tandas (sets of songs) and cortinas (music between sets).
- Cabeceo
- An invitation through eye contact and a nod. At our informal Wednesday práctica, a friendly spoken invitation is welcome too.
Already dance elsewhere? Welcome. Our Wednesdays are informal; cabeceo and full tandas are optional. Check the calendar for milongas and other events around the region.
See what’s coming upDo I need a partner?
No. We rotate partners during the intro lesson, so everyone gets a chance to dance. Plenty of people come on their own.
What is Argentine tango vs. ballroom tango?
Argentine tango is an improvised social dance with roots in Argentina and Uruguay. Partners respond to each other and the music, and couples move counterclockwise around the floor. Ballroom tango uses different technique and is danced both socially and competitively. At GRT we teach Argentine tango.
Milonga vs. práctica: what's the difference?
A práctica is a relaxed practice night: people try things, ask questions, and dance as much or as little as they like. Our Wednesday nights are prácticas. A milonga is a social dance, usually a bit more formal, and may follow traditional códigos like cabeceo and tandas.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes you can move in, and shoes that let you pivot easily. Smooth leather or suede soles work well. If your shoes grip the floor, ask an instructor for advice before trying turns. You don’t need to buy dance shoes for your first lesson.
Who comes to GRT: age range, experience level?
All kinds of people, from first-timers to dancers with years of experience, and a wide range of ages. The Wednesday intro lesson is built for people who have never danced before.
